The Seal Rescue
Sanctuary in Gweek was started in 1958 after Ken Jones rescued a seal pup that had been washed up on the beach near his home in St Agnes. After caring for rescued seals and oiled birds from a single pool it was clear that more room was needed and the Sanctuary was moved to Gweek in 1975.The Sanctuary is continually expanding and improving its facilities and today cares for rescued seals with a specially designed Hospital with separate isolation, treatment and preparation areas. The rescued seals also benefit from nursery and convalescence pools before being returned to the wild while the few that don't make welcome additions to the resident pool.
Gweek Seal Sanctuary rescues over 30 pups a year from around the Cornish coast and most of them are returned back into the sea. Occasionally, some members of the team are often called in for help on rescues of other marine creatures. By exhibiting some fascinating animals and delivering talks and displays to visitors, the Gweek Seal Sanctuary continue to contribute to the conservation effort.
