Claws is the exciting new feature at the Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary. Featuring an amazing array of sea creatures, from the powerful Mantis Shrimp to the huge Giant Spider Crabs from Japan, Claws is an exhibit not to miss.
Along with having what are considered to be the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, which are mounted on stalks and move independently of each other, the Mantis Shrimp is one of the most powerful creatures in the sea. Not actually a shrimp but named for it's resemblance to both the shrimp and the Praying Mantis, the Mantis Shrimp have spring-loaded front claws that they use to kill their prey by spearing, stunning or dismembering with an impact equal to that of a bullet.
The Giant Spider Crabs on display at the Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary are originally from Japan where they live between 50 and 300 metres below sea level in the Pacific Ocean. These Spider Crabs are giants indeed; an adult male can measure over three metres from outstretched claw to outstretched claw.
The underwater population of Claws is furthered by the inclusion of the large, reddish - brown Edible Crab with it's characteristic "pie-crust" edge, and lobsters both common and spiny, giving visitors a superb view of life crustacean under water.
