Britain's first purpose-built turtle rescue centre opened in May at the SEA LIFE Park in Weymouth. The new Turtle Sanctuary will provide expert care for sea turtles that get stranded around the UK coast after drifting off-course in the Gulf Stream.
Opened in 1983, the Weymouth SEA LIFE Centre has grown steadily year-in, year-out, and is now one of the most diverse animal attractions in the south of England.
Spectacular marine life displays covering a variety of habitats, from British coastal rockpools to tropical lagoons, house creatures ranging from humble shrimps and starfish to sharks, rays and seahorses. The Park is home to one of the world's most successful breeding facilities for the latter. The National Seahorse Breeding and Conservation Centre, where both adult and infant seahorses of several varieties flourish.
The Weymouth SEA LIFE Centre also houses a fledgling colony of rare Humboldt penguins; a family of Asian short-clawed otters and five resident common seals in a fantastic pool complex including a breathtaking underwater observatory.
With beautiful landscaping, over 7 acres and children's entertainments between each separate display area, Weymouth SEA LIFE Park is a great venue for all weathers.
An exciting new exhibition called 'VENOM' added in 2007 at Weymouth SEA LIFE Park and Marine Sanctuary features some deadly marine creatures! You can be up close to some of the deadliest sea snakes, lionfish, porcupine puffer fish and moon jellyfish.
The National Turtle Sanctuary, the Otter Sanctuary, funny Humboldt penguins, gorgeous seals and the Splash Lagoon bring adults and children alike a mass of activities. The kids are going to love this day out!
